The Tudor Religious Roller Coaster

The Tudor period saw some immense changes to the Church of England in a very short space of time. How can we describe the changes made by each monarch?

You can download the worksheet for today’s lesson here. You can also download the ‘Roller Coaster’ template for Task Two if you want to do this task on Microsoft Paint. If you cannot download these, please complete the tasks in the yellow boxes below on paper.

KEY WORDS:

STARTER:
The changes to the Church in the Tudor times has sometimes been likened to a ‘Roller Coaster’. Why might this be the case?
Would it be an extreme roller coaster or a gentle roller coaster? Why?

TASK ONE: What types of changes did each Monarch make?

Look at the monarchs below. Consider which change and continuity words would go best with each Monarch and explain why. You can use the same word for different monarchs if you think more than one monarch made this kind of change!

Good if you can think of one word to go with each monarch.
Great if you can think of two words to go with each monarch.
Amazing if you can think of three words to go with each monarch.

WORDS TO HELP YOU:
Ground breaking change = the first time the change was made.
Complete change = something that changed entirely compared to what had come before.
Partial change = when some things changed, but other things remained the same.
Temporary change = something that changed, but only for a short while.
Long-lasting change = something that changed and remained that way for a very long time.
Dramatic change = a very big change.
Rapid change = a change that occurred very quickly.

Henry VIII (1509 – 1547)

What changes did I make to the Church?
I was the first person to change the Church in England. I removed the Pope and put myself in charge. I closed down the Catholic monasteries and introduced some English prayer books.

What did I keep the same?
I kept churches decorated, and most people could only read a Latin Bible. The Churches still felt very Catholic.

QUESTION: So how can you describe the changes I made?

Edward VI (1547 – 1553)

What changes did I make to the Church?
I tried to turn the country to complete Protestantism. I made the Churches plain and simple, and introduced an English Prayer Book for everybody. I punished Catholics harshly if they did not attend Church, and even threw Catholic bishops in the Tower of London.

What did I keep the same?
I completely removed Catholicism in England, so nothing remained the same.

QUESTION: So how can you describe the changes I made?

Mary I (1553 – 1558)

What changes did I make to the Church?
I tried to reinstate Catholicism in England, so I changed everything that Edward did. I put the Pope back in charge. I made the churches decorated and put back stained glass windows. The Latin Bible was reintroduced. I burnt almost 300 Protestant heretics alive when they refused to follow this Church.

What did I keep the same?
I wanted to give Churches back their land, but my nobles stopped me. This was only a small issue though.

QUESTION: So how can you describe the changes I made?

Elizabeth I (1558 – 1603)

What changes did I make to the Church?
As a Protestant Queen, I changed the official religion back to Protestantism again, but I did not punish Catholics too harshly, unlike Edward. The English Bible was available to everybody. My Church still exists today!

What did I keep the same?
I was worried about a Catholic revolution, so I kept Churches looking a bit Catholic. They kept their stained glass windows and decorations, and the priests had to wear special vestments to please Catholics.
